There's no perfect way to pray. But sometimes if you don't know where to start, having a model to follow can help.
Pray through The Lord's PrayerIn Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus taught his disciples a model of prayer. Try praying through each line of The Lord's Prayer, putting each line into your own words and applying it to your situation/requests.
Pray through The ACTS Model- Adoration – What can I praise God for, based on His character, not based on what He's done?
- Confession – What sin can I confess? How have I missed the mark?
- Thanksgiving – What can I thank God for in light of who He is and what Jesus has done?
- Supplication – What do I need to ask of God?
Pray through The PsalmsWhen we struggle to find the "right words," choosing to read a Psalm aloud, can be a helpful starting point. Below is a list of a few psalms for different occasions:
- When fearful: Psalm 27
- When anxious: Psalm 46
- When discouraged: Psalm 23
- For direction: Psalm 37
- For help: Psalm 40
- When tempted: Psalm 1
- When grieving: Psalm 42
- When grateful: Psalm 100
